Tax year 2026 (paid in 2026, filed in early 2027)
What this calculator does
Type in what you earn before tax and it works out what you keep after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, your state's income tax and any 401(k) and health-insurance deductions. Choose your filing status and state, then a year, month, week, day or hour.
The 2026 federal rates it uses
| Rate | Single | Married filing jointly |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | up to $12,400 | up to $24,800 |
| 12% | to $50,400 | to $100,800 |
| 22% | to $105,700 | to $211,400 |
| 24% | to $201,775 | to $403,550 |
| 32% | to $256,225 | to $512,450 |
| 35% | to $640,600 | to $768,700 |
| 37% | over $640,600 | over $768,700 |
Rates are applied to income after the standard deduction: $16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household. Social Security is 6.2% on pay up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 (single or head of household) or $250,000 (married filing jointly). Pay you put into a 401(k) is not taxed for income tax, but is still charged Social Security and Medicare. Health premiums taken through your employer's plan escape both.
State income tax
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages. The other states and DC are worked out from each state's own 2026 brackets, standard deduction and personal exemption or credit. Head of household uses the single-filer state figures.
What it does not include
- City or county income taxes (for example New York City, Philadelphia, Ohio and Maryland local taxes).
- State payroll deductions such as disability or paid family leave insurance (for example in California, New York and New Jersey).
- Tax credits such as the child tax credit, or itemised deductions.
- Extra withholding or changes you made on your W-4, and other income.
Figures are the tax you owe for the year, spread across your pay. Your actual paycheck withholding may be a little different, and you settle up when you file.

Questions people ask
How much tax do I pay on $75,000 if I'm single?
$7,670 federal income tax and $5,737.50 Social Security and Medicare, before any state tax — about $61,592 left.
Why is my paycheck different?
Withholding depends on your W-4, pay schedule and any bonuses. This calculator works from the tax actually owed for the year.
Does a 401(k) really lower my tax?
Yes. Money you put into a traditional 401(k) is left out of your taxable income for income tax, so your tax falls. You still pay Social Security and Medicare on it.
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax wages.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The sums happen in your browser and are gone when you close the page.
