Tax year 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027
What this calculator does
Type in what you earn before tax and it works out what lands in your bank account: Income Tax, National Insurance, your pension and any student loan repayments are taken off. Choose a year, month, week, day or hour — whichever way your pay is quoted.

National Insurance (employees): 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, then 2% above that. The Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000, and is gone completely at £125,140.
Student loan repayments are 9% of what you earn above your plan's threshold (Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000). A Postgraduate Loan takes 6% above £21,000, on top of any other loan.
What it does not include
- Anything that changes your tax code: company car, benefits in kind, Marriage Allowance, Blind Person's Allowance, tax owed from earlier years.
- Other income such as savings interest, dividends or a second job.
- Pension arrangements where the provider claims the tax relief for you (“relief at source”). The take-home figure is the same, but the pension line will look different on your payslip.
- Wales: the Welsh Government sets its own rates but they are currently the same as England's, so the same figures apply.
Questions people ask
Why is my payslip different from this?
Your payslip uses your tax code, which can include allowances or amounts you owe. If your code is not 1257L, the tax figure here will not match. Your pension, benefits and pay date also change it.
How much tax will I pay on £30,000?
In England, Wales or Northern Ireland: £3,486 Income Tax and £1,394 National Insurance a year, so about £25,120 take-home.
What is National Insurance for?
It builds your entitlement to the State Pension and some benefits. Employees pay it on top of Income Tax, but not on pension contributions taken through salary sacrifice.
What is salary sacrifice?
You give up part of your pay and your employer pays it into your pension instead. Because your pay is lower, you pay less Income Tax and less National Insurance.
